Effort being made to salvage roadside memorials in Commerce City

Families are being asked to remove memorials to loved ones before road-widening occurs on Highway 2

Families who have placed roadside memorials on Colorado 2 in Commerce City are being asked to remove them as a project that is slated to widen the road from two to four lanes between East 72nd Avenue and Interstate 76 intensifies.

The city is asking people to remove the items as soon as possible but will do so itself and store the memorials for three months if no one comes for them. There are nine visible roadside memorials on Colorado 2 in the area where the work is being done. The project .

For families with a formal Department of Transportation memorial sign, contact the agency at 303-757-9662 for assistance. For memorials that are removed and stored, families can call 303-239-6757 to arrange to pick up these items by March 12.

The Colorado 2 widening project is expected to be finished in 2018.
