Pueblo law enforcement officers have one person in custody and are seeking two others after someone tried to set a pair of patrol cars on fire during a stolen vehicle investigation on Tuesday.
The incident began after someone in the 27000 block of U.S. Highway 96 reported a stolen vehicle on Tuesday evening, according to the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office.
A deputy who responded learned that the vehicle was located at a home in the 3000 block of Denver Boulevard. Deputies and Pueblo police officers who went to that home found a second stolen vehicle.
While they were at the home, “a car came by and threw the accelerant on the ground, and attempted to burn,” the patrol cars, said Gayle Perez, sheriff’s office spokeswoman, on Wednesday. One of the patrol cars was damaged.
Police in the area tried to stop the suspect vehicle as it fled east on 29th Street through several neighborhoods.
The pursuit continued onto northbound Interstate 25 when the driver lost control and ran off the right side of the road, and came to a stop on railroad tracks near the off-ramp to the U.S. 50 Bypass.
Three suspects ran, and police apprehended one person a short time later. A search for the other two was still underway on Wednesday morning. Investigators are trying to determine if the attack against police officers was linked to the stolen vehicles, Perez said.
Police found guns, drugs, cash and other suspected stolen items in the suspect’s vehicle.
