A pedestrian walks along Yale Avenue near Dahlia Street in Denver on Dec. 17.

A few days ago I saw a handicapped person dangerously working his way up South Broadway in the slush, snow and muddy cold splashes that existed in the gutter. He had no sidewalk option, as 75 percent of the sidewalks had not been cleared. The traffic sped past him at normal speed with no expectation that they would encounter this poor soul.

I can’t imagine the indignity of such circumstances for those similarly challenged. Fate put them in a wheelchair and now our society ignores their special needs.

Where is our civic concern and responsibility regarding clearing snow from walks? Many pedestrians navigate these dangerous walks at considerable risk, because the laws that require snow clearance after storms aren’t enforced. Public safety? Waiting on the sun to do the job?

Merchants of all kinds are open for business; they display American flags and advertise their businesses. Shouldn’t they show some civic responsibility?
