A late Sunday night brush fire between Boulder and Lyons was knocked down overnight after spreading quickly under dry, windy conditions and prompting home evacuations.
The fire, which began near the corner of North Foothills Highway (U.S. 36) and Lefthand Canyon Drive, was first reported to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office at about 11:10 p.m., Cmdr. Mike Wagner said.
“It started as a small grass fire and quickly escalated,” he said. “It became a wind-driven event and rapidly expanded.”
Wagner said the fire covered 17 acres.
Winds hovered in the range of 60 mph in the Boulder area for most of Sunday, with 90 mph gusts reported in multiple foothills locations.
