SAN ANTONIO — It’s almost become more of a hashtag than a haircut.

The #GundyMullet — the throwback, flared-out, rock-and-roll haircut sported by Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy — has become a social media sensation this season, and it shows no signs of slowing.

“Him wearing a mullet?” said Oklahoma State cornerback Ramon Richards, laughing at the mere mention of his coach’s hairstyle. “I’m not going to say nothing. But if we continue to have success, if he has the mullet, let him keep the mullet. I might get me a mullet.”

Gundy’s mullet, at least its beginning stages, made its first appearance at Big 12 media days in July. Legend has it that the haircut, better fit for fronting a Whitesnake cover band than coaching a football team, sprouted after Gundy’s son doubted he would continue to grow out hair that was getting long in the back.

Never one to back down from a challenge, Gundy kept letting the locks flow. Now they look like they could drag along the River Walk in San Antonio.

What’s next? A mohawk for CU coach ?
