Dottie Lamm stated in her column that she is now “fully awake.” She vowed to fight the “inherent danger in … the rhetorical tone of the new administration.”
Go back to sleep, Dottie. It is time to allow the Trump administration to fix the things that liberal Democrats and some compliant Republicans allowed to happen during the last eight years: a Middle East that has degenerated into chaos; radical Muslim terrorists killing people wherever they can; a national debt that has ballooned from $10 trillion to $20 trillion in just eight years; a health care system that is bordering on crisis; middle-class jobs fleeing the United States; a racial divide and civil unrest not seen since the 1960s; police officers becoming targets of murder; and an immigration system and a southern border that are out of control. The list of things needing fixing by the Trump administration goes on and on.
It is time to wake up to the reality that Donald Trump is our new president. We need to give him and his administration the support they need to fulfill his campaign promise to “Make America Great Again.”

Reading Dottie Lamm’s essay made me realize that we who lived through the Great Depression, World War II, the Holocaust, and the Cold War are a small minority today. Our experience has left us more sensitive to signs of a return to those days than are those who only read about them.
Donald Trump is not Adolf Hitler; their personalities are totally different. But when we witness the reactions to a seductive speaker — the excitement, unquestioning allegiance, threats to civil rights and freedom of the press … and the fears of those threatened — there arises in us a familiar dread.
Perhaps we are like the survivors of a long-ago tsunami, who recognize the signs and try to warn those with no such memory. History can repeat itself — even here.
