One person was treated for smoke inhalation after a fire engulfed a Lakewood apartment Sunday night, authorities say.

Firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire that destroyed one apartment and caused damage to others at the Big Bunny Motel at 6128 W. Colfax Ave., said Division Chief Gary Armstrong, spokesman for West Metro Fire Rescue.

Firefighters got the emergency fire call at 8:55 p.m., Armstrong said. They could see heavy flames leaping above the apartment roof from their station a few blocks away, he said.

It took firefighters 19 minutes to extinguish the blaze, Armstrong said.

“Fast and furious,” he said, referring to the work of firefighters. Although a second alarm was sounded, the first crew of firefighters had it out before the second crew arrived and they were called off.

There was a total loss to one apartment, Armstrong said.

Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire, he said.
