University of Denver sophomore from Highlands Ranch led Team USA on Wednesday into the championship of the World Junior Championship in Montreal. He went 3-for-3 in a seven-round shootout to lead Team USA to a 4-3 victory over Russia in the semifinals.
Terry scored on different moves in the fourth, sixth and seventh rounds, clinching victory in the latter. He tied it 1-1 in the fourth with a low forehand wrist shot. And, after teammate Jeremy Bracco scored in the fifth round to force sudden-death rounds, Terry faked goalie Ilya Samsonov with another wrister and slid the puck through his legs with his forehand. Terry won it with a backhander through Samsonov’s legs — the Americans’ first lead in the shootout.
“I think I blanked out for all three of them — and it couldn’t have worked out better,” Terry said during a NHL Network interview.
The Americans will play Canada or Sweden in Thursday’s gold-medal game.
