An 84-year-old man died in the Adams County Detention Facility on Dec. 28 and the cause of death is unknown.

Marciano Briones’ cause of death remains under investigation by the Adams County coroner, who does not release preliminary death investigation results. A final autopsy report will not be available for 10 to 12 weeks.

Sgt. Jim Morgen, a sheriff’s spokesman, said the inmate did not commit suicide and that no deputies used force against him.

Briones fell ill around 1 a.m. and was taken to the jail’s medical ward where he received help for 30 to 40 minutes before dying, Morgen said. The sheriff’s investigation into the death cannot be finalized until the coroner’s autopsy report is finished, he said.

Briones was serving one year in jail on a felony DUI charge, Morgen said.
