United flight from Denver to Fort Lauderdale diverted, Southwest flight delayed in wake of airport shooting

Several inbound flights from Fort Lauderdale are also listed as delayed

A United Airlines flight from Denver to Fort Lauderdale has been diverted on Friday afternoon and a Southwest Airlines flight following the same route delayed in the wake that has left at least five dead and eight others wounded.

The United flight, flight 1164, was being diverted to Fort Myers, Fla., the airline said.

A 12:35 p.m. Southwest flight from Denver to Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport was showing as delayed.

A 6:45 p.m. Southwest flight to Fort Lauderdale from Denver and an 11:38 p.m.Spirit Airlines flight on the same route were still listed as on time as of 1:45 p.m.

A gunman opened fire in the baggage claim area at the Fort Lauderdale airport Friday morning about 11 a.m., killing five people and wounding eight before being taken into custody in an attack sent panicked passengers running out of the terminal and onto the tarmac, authorities said.

Authorities gave no details on a possible motive for the shooting inside Terminal 2, which serves Delta Air Lines and Air Canada.

Several flights heading from Fort Lauderdale to Denver on Friday afternoon.

The Federal Aviation Administration about 1:15 p.m. issued a stop to flights arriving or departing from Fort Lauderdale.

“Travelers headed to FLL should check with their air carriers,” the FAA said.
