Heavy traffic to the high country has caused delays of up to three hours for drivers heading west on Interstate 70 from Denver to Silverthorne Saturday morning.

The delays are due to the high traffic volume during peak travel season, Colorado Department of Transportation spokesman Phillip Embry said. No accidents have been reported along I-70.

CDOT has been tweeting live updates about the traffic, gradually escalating from a 75-minute wait around 7 a.m. to three hours by 8:40 a.m. Shortly after 11 a.m., CDOT tweeted that traffic to the Eisenhower Tunnel had decreased, shortening delays to 90-minutes.

The first Winter Park Express train took off from Union Station at 7 a.m. Saturday. Among the most common reasons passengers were excited — avoiding the traffic.

In other railroad and traffic news, the railroad crossing at West 13th Avenue between Shoshone and Umatilla streets is closed for work. The BNSF Railway encourages drivers to take alternate routes. It should be reopened by 4 p.m.

Westbound I-70 at Vasquez Boulevard was shut down after a crash involving a semi. No injuries were reported. It was reopened around 11:30 a.m.
