MeganSchrader’s columnon the ongoing mistreatment of children in Colorado’s Division of Youth Corrections (DYC) is alarming.
While it is encouraging to learn some progress has been made by updating “the division’s policies to strictly limit the use of solitary confinement,” and changes to “policies on using pressure points and femur strikes” have been made, DYC’s data shows kids are still being raped while in the protection of the state, high recidivism rates persist and DYC persists in implementing a correctional model which is not producing the desired results for our youth or for our state.
In 2015, the Annie E. Casey Foundation reported Colorado received the worst ranking nationwide for systemic or recurring maltreatment of youth in our juvenile correction facilities. Why doesn’t DYC implement the most successful model? How long must kids and taxpayers wait for a more thoughtful, constructive model to be implemented by DYC?
