Re: “” Jan. 21 Vincent Carroll column.
Vincent Carroll criticizes those experiencing homelessness and their advocates for trying to take away the city’s responsibility to provide safe and attractive “sidewalks, alleys, parks and other public property.” What Carroll seems to forget is that everyone wants the same basic end, but for different reasons.
The city, the business community and some members of the public want to get rid of those experiencing homelessness from sleeping on the 16th Street Mall and sidewalks because their presence interferes with business, tourism and the general ambiance of the city. Those who are homeless and their advocates want the same thing because they find such sleeping arrangements unacceptable.
Why can’t the city, the business community, the City Council and others work with those experiencing homelessness and their advocates to create more acceptable alternative, safe and dignified sleeping spaces?
