A 25-year-old man died Sunday in a southwest Colorado snowmobile crash.

The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office says Trenton Maddux-Garcia struck a metal gate while riding on Beaver Meadows Road, a few miles east of the town of Bayfield.

“Passersby remained with him while a friend went to a location where he had cell phone coverage and called 911,” Dan Bender, a sheriff’s office spokesman, said Tuesday. “Before EMS personnel arrived on scene, Maddux-Garcia lapsed into unconsciousness, then stopped breathing.”

Bender says the passersby began trying to resuscitate Maddux-Garcia before medical responders arrived and took over.

Maddux-Garcia, a La Plata County resident, was pronounced dead after being taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango, the sheriff’s office said.
