Thornton police arrested a Denver man in connection with a fatal shooting early Monday near a large apartment complex.

Jaron Trujillo, 27, was taken into custody on suspicion of first-degree murder.

Two people — a man and a woman considered persons of interest in the slaying — were taken into custody by SWAT officers but later released without charges.

The shooting happened about 3:45 a.m. on a road near building six of the Renaissance 88 Apartments, 368 E. 88th Ave., Thornton police spokesman Matt Barnes said.

The shooting victim — a man — was pronounced dead at the scene, Barnes said. Police said they were working to identify the man, whose name age and hometown have not been released.

When police arrived at the shooting scene they found the man’s body in the road, Barnes said.

Witnesses said two male suspects and a possible female suspect were later seen returning to the apartment complex.

A motive of the shooting is under investigation, Barnes said. Police say witnesses indicated that they overheard an argument prior to hearing gunshots.

The 180-unit  near East 88th Avenue and Washington Street, is owned by the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless and provides housing for former homeless families and people with disabilities. The development is subsidized through a federal rental assistance program for low-income families.

This case remains under active investigation, police say.

Anyone with information on the killing is asked to call the Thornton police tip line at 720-977-5069.
