Strong winds blew a giant cottonwood tree into the home at 4049 Crawford Court in west Loveland on Tuesday morning, causing extensive damage to the house and displacing its four residents, including a 10-week-old baby.

No one was seriously injured in the incident, which occurred just before 5 a.m., but repairs to the home’s roof, bathroom, upstairs bedroom and floors will likely take between three to five months, according to Josh Vicars of RTC Restoration & Roofing, which will assist in reconstruction.

Vicars estimated the cost of damage at $200,000.

“It all depends on what’s in there. It’s a nightmare,” Vicars said.

Tenants of the home were asleep before the tree came crashing through the roof down into the first floor.

Gusts just under 50 miles per hour were recorded Tuesday morning at the Fort Collins-Loveland Municipal Airport.

The 10-week-old infant girl didn’t even wake up despite being covered by insulation, her father and resident Travis Befus said.
