Re: “” Feb. 22 guest commentary.

Kudos to Mayor Steve Hogan from Aurora and Mayor Marc Williams from Arvada for their guest opinion arguing that the legislature include public transit, sidewalks, street crossings and bike lanes in a state transportation tax.

It is sheer folly to think that we can solve our traffic problems just by widening roads. A quick look at T-REX project on Interstate 25 should disabuse anyone of this notion — the congestion there is worse than before it was widened.

The real future for our state lies in better bus service; fast, frequent rapid transit; and in making our communities safe and friendly places to walk and bike. More than half of car trips are less than 3 miles — think how much better our lives would be if most of these trips were walking and biking.

We need new tax revenues for transportation, but it needs to include public transit and walkable, bikeable streets that work for all of Colorado.
