New York Times reporter, Glenn Thrush works in the Brady Briefing Room after being excluded from a press gaggle by White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer last Friday. The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, CNN and Politico were excluded from the off camera gaggle.

Re: “,” Feb. 24 news story.

The most troubling news in Saturday’s paper was found in a four-paragraph story buried on Page 18A. In an ominous break with White House precedent, press secretary Sean Spicer singled out six news organizations for exclusion from a press briefing on Friday. This represents a dangerous assault on the freedom of the press enshrined in the First Amendment. This is yet another salvo in the Trump administration’s ongoing assault on the media, one which has included utterance of false statements, dismissal of critical reporting as “fake news,” and the presidentap demonization of the media as the “enemy of the people.” Democracy is only possible when public officials operate under the watchful eye of a free and independent press. This latest development takes us one more step down the path to dictatorship.
