Brighton police believe a Fort Lupton man was under the influence of alcohol and drugs and driving recklessly when he caused a multi-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon on U.S. 85 that left a 25-year-old Northglenn woman seriously hurt.

The wreck happened about 2 p.m. when the man, driving a gray, 2004 Ford Mustang northbound, slammed into the woman’s 2004 Subaru Outback at 124th Avenue.

Witnesses said the Ford has been “maneuvering erratically on northbound Highway 85, passing multiple vehicles at high rates of speed and running red lights at three intersections” before the wreck.

The seriously injured woman was flown to an area hospital, where Brighton police say she remains in critical condition. The man driving the Mustang was taken in an ambulance to medical care.

“Although the investigation is still underway, preliminary evidence indicates alcohol and drugs were involved in the crash,” Brighton police said in a Friday news release. “The identity of the 40-year-old Fort Lupton man who was driving the Mustang is being withheld pending the filing of charges.”
