Thanks for reporting on Ryan Zinke’s confirmation as secretary of the Department of Interior. Zinke is filling a time-honored tradition of having a Western state politician lead that federal agency. The Interior Department manages not only the national parks and monuments but BLM lands and wildlife refuges used by many citizens.
These days many federal lands are under attack with the goal of privatization. Some attacks include wanting to overturn the 1906 Antiquities Act that former President Teddy Roosevelt and many subsequent presidents used for protecting key lands. Let us hope Zinke will keep his pledge and continue with that protecting tradition. Let us hope Zinke will not be the first Interior secretary to turn his back on that honorable record, as some in the GOP are now demanding.
