Rockies 10, Dodgers 9, At Salt River Fields

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The Rockies received a solid three innings from starter and belted five homers, two by , but they still had to hold on to beat the Los Angeles 10-9 Monday afternoon. The Dodgers scored seven runs in the last two innings, turning a rout into a squeaker.

The game ended in unique fashion. With Stetson Allie batting for L.A., O’Koyea Dickson was caught trying to steal home. Catcher Anthony Bemboom fired the ball to shortstop Daniel Castro, who was covering second base as Chris Taylor stole second. Castro cut off the throw and fired the ball back to Bemboom, who tagged Dickson at the plate.

“We practice that, and today we executed it very well,” manager Bud Black said.

For starters: Chatwood, showing zip and command with his fastball, gave up one run on three hits, walking one and striking out one. His one major mistake was leaving a ball over the plate for Joc Pederson, who clubbed a solo homer in the second inning.

BOXSCORE:

“I felt really good, a lot better than the last time out,” said Chatwood, who threw 40 pitches, 23 for strikes. “I feel really good about my stuff right now, the ball is coming out of my hand well.”

Black is pleased with Chatwood’s progress.

“His stuff was good, it really was,” Black said. “There was good movement to his fastball, at times. There were a couple of misfires, but overall I thought he threw the ball well.”

Hits: Valaika, trying to make the roster as a utility infielder but likely bound to start the season at Triple-A, cranked out two solo homers, one in the second and one in the fourth. He now has three homers this spring. … smashed a two-run homer in the second and catcher hit a solo shot in the fourth.  … Closer candidate pitched a one-two-three sixth, striking out two.  He has not allowed an earned run this spring.

Misses: Hard-throwing right-hander melted down in the eighth, the Dodgers reaching him for three runs on one hit in two-thirds of an inning. Most disconcerting, even though his fastball reached 96 mph, he walked three and uncorked three wild pitches. … It was not a good day for prospect Shane Carl, either. The right-hander lacked command, giving up three runs on five hits and a walk in his inning of work.

Up next: The Rockies (6-5) travel to Surprise to face the (2-8) at 1:05 p.m. Tuesday at Surprise Stadium.

Rockies’ probables: LHP Tyler Anderson RHP Antonio Senzaleta, RHP Jordan Lyles, RHP Johendi Jiminian, LHP Mike Dunn.

Rangers’ probable starter: RHP Yu Darvish
