Two men who vandalized a trailhead in 2015 near Steamboat Springs have been ordered to pay nearly $115,000 for the extensive damage they caused by using heavy equipment in an impromptu demolition derby.
Contractors were just a day away from finishing the project when they discovered the damage Charles C. Enger and Michael A. Jones had caused using several pieces of heavy equipment. Enger also drove a bulldozer into a new $40,000 bathroom facility. A skid steer was found overturned in the parking area.

Enger told investigators Jones showed him how to use the equipment. Jones said he just watched as Enger wreaked havoc.
Enger was arrested for allegedly crashing his car while intoxicated after the vandalism. A Routt County deputy linked him to the crime scene by matching a boot print at the trailhead to the boots Enger was wearing in jail.
The restitution will compensate the contractors, who had to redo much of their work, said District Attorney Brett Barkey. “Making crime victims who suffer financial loss whole again is a critical part of holding offenders accountable.”
