A 60-year-old man standing in the middle of South Academy Boulevard in El Paso County early Thursday after his vehicle broke down was struck by a car and killed, investigators say.

The Colorado State Patrol says the crash happened on the boulevard, Colorado 83, at about 1 a.m. near its intersection with U.S. 87, just south of Colorado Springs.

According to the State Patrol, the man’s Pontiac Montana broke down on the right side of the southbound lanes of the roadway. The vehicle was safely parked on the shoulder and he was “out of the vehicle and standing in the middle lane.”

A Subaru Tribeca, driven by a 22-year-old Colorado Springs man, was southbound on Colorado 83 in the middle lane when he “swerved to the right hitting the driver of the Pontiac.”

“The Subaru swerved to try and avoid the pedestrian,” said Technician Tim Ortiz, of the State Patrol.

The 60-year-old man, from Colorado Springs, died at Memorial Hospital. His name has not been released.

The State Patrol says speed, alcohol and drugs are not factors in the crash, which remains under investigation. Further details were not immediately released.
