Denver police have identified the suspect in the face Wednesday afternoon on East Colfax Avenue, leaving the victim critically wounded.

Quinn Jarrell Simms, 28, is being investigated for first-degree assault and second-degree assault. He is being held at Denver’s downtown jail without bail, city records show.

The shooting happened about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Colfax and Valentia Street, according to the Denver Police Department. The victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

An update on his condition was not released Thursday morning.

According to a probable cause statement for Simms, trouble started when he got into an altercation with a man that turned physical. Simms injured the man’s face, police say.

During that assault, according to investigators, a second man shoved Simms, at which point Simms pulled out a handgun and fired a bullet into the second man’s face.

The statement says Simms was arrested after a chase. Police say surveillance video from the area confirmed witness accounts of the shooting and that they found a gun in the area where Simms fled.
