The 66-acre South Table Mountain wildfire near Golden is now 50 percent contained, according to officials.

“Hoping for even more good news this afternoon,” says a 1 p.m. tweet by Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

The fire was originally estimated to be about 100 acres. A more accurate measurement was taken Friday. The fire is in steep, rocky terrain largely covered with oak brush, said Ronda Scholting, spokeswoman for West Metro.

The crews had a relatively quiet night, according to West Metro Fire Rescue. The fire made little movement, according to the fire department. A briefing is scheduled for 8 a.m. Friday morning.

“It may have moved slightly. There were a few flare ups because of wind changes,” Scholting said.

Firefighters don’t know what caused the wildfire, she said.

Two fires broke out Thursday afternoon in the foothills of Jefferson County, including a quarter-acre fire that was quickly doused.

The second one was close to the Coors Brewing plant and grew to more than 100 acres. A helicopter was brought in to drop water.

Firefighters from Arvada, Golden, Golden Gate, Pleasant View and Foothills fire departments joined the fight on steep and rocky terrain. One firefighter suffered minor injuries.

At one point in the afternoon, smoke blowing from the fire blew into the Green Mountain area of Lakewood, raising false alarms that a fire had started there as well. Green Mountain has been the site of several wildfires in the past few months.
