An Adams County deputy who was injured in a crash on Interstate 70 near Bennett pulled a person from a burning car following the early morning collision Tuesday, authorities say.

The deputy was injured when the sheriff’s vehicle he was in was struck from behind by another car at 5:24 a.m., said Sgt. Rob Madden, spokesman for the Colorado State Patrol.

The deputy suffered cuts during the crash. The car that hit the sheriff’s vehicle caught on fire, Madden said.

“He was able to pull them from the burning vehicle,” he said.

The same deputy then directed highway traffic following the accident, Madden said.

“They’re out there doing their job,” said Madden, referring to the deputy. He said he didn’t know the gender of the deputy.

The extent of the injuries to the driver rescued from the burning car is not immediately available, Madden said. The age, identity and gender of the victim is also not yet known.

I-70 was closed in both directions in Bennett following the crash.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
