Interview with Matt Reichel, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
:After a career in the power industry, I was burnt out. In 2013 I sold all my stuff, bought an RV and hit the road. I spent six months living in Breckenridge skiing every day, and another six months touring downhill mountain bike parks across the western U.S. During this trip, the idea behind the company was born.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
:What I want to keep this company from becoming is a factory assembly line of trailers. We build each trailer by hand exactly to the requests of the customer. Whether you want to haul a motorcycle on the tongue, add a forced air heater for your hunting base camp, or have a hot water shower after a dusty day on the trail, we’ll do it. Some of our best and most unique ideas come directly from our customer, and we love it.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
:The fact that I get to work with people on a daily basis who have the same desire and passion for exploration and adventure.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
:Growing has been the biggest challenge. The business started on the shoestring budget of a full-time ski instructor in 2015. The first camper was built in a single car garage in Breckenridge. Now I have a full shop in Arvada with an employee and numerous vendors. You want to expand quickly but doing so can sink a company just as fast. This quote by Robert M. Pirsig from his novel “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance,” sums up that challenge very well — “You climb a mountain in an equilibrium between restlessness and exhaustion.”
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
:The Boreas campers were named after the pass road where I lived and where the first prototype trailer was designed and built. Boreas is also the Greek God of the North Wind.
