Confirmation hearings for Neil Gorsuch, President Donald Trump's nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court, will begin Monday.

As his confirmation approaches, I am calling on U.S. Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch to turn down his ill-begotten nomination.

Last year, Senate Republicans refused to hold a hearing for President Barack Obama’s nominee, Judge Merrick Garland. For nearly a year, they have prevented the American people from having a fully functioning Supreme Court. The Constitution says the president shall nominate and with the consent of the Senate appoint Supreme Court judges.

None of the framers stated that the Senate could simply refuse to perform its job. If Gorsuch, who says he honors the original intent of the Constitution, is a man of his beliefs, the honorable thing to do would be to reject the nomination, the product of unconstitutional and certainly undemocratic actions.

This would be a historic and morally correct choice — the beginning of the end of the partisan politics that is crushing our democracy and dishonoring the Constitution. And, I believe, his greatest contribution to the rule of law.

Sen. Michael Bennet recently responded to an inquiry I made to his office regarding whether he supports Judge Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court. He declared he was still reviewing the judge’s record.

Hundreds of prestigious Colorado lawyers have declared their bipartisan support for Judge Gorsuch. These include several well-known, well-respected Democratic lawyers. The American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary unanimously gave Judge Gorsuch its highest rating, “well qualified.” The rating, done by an independent, non-partisan committee, was based on hundreds of interviews with people who have personal knowledge of Gorsuch’s qualifications. Teams of distinguished law school professors and a national team of leading practicing lawyers with Supreme Court experience examined his legal writings.

Sen. Bennet, considering the sources of this extensive support for Judge Gorsuch, please explain specifically what you have yet to evaluate about him.
