A 16-year-old student at Bear Creek High School in Lakewood was arrested Thursday after police say they found him in a class with a handgun.

Lakewood police say nobody was threatened by the teen.

“It was on him,” Steve Davis, a Lakewood police spokesman, said. “It was in his pocket. Apparently another student must have tipped off the school. They let our school resource officer know.”

Davis said the teen fought officers who tried to arrest him. Investigators don’t know why he had the gun.

“We had two or three officers there when they contacted this kid,” Davis said. “He did resist them. It wasn’t just a very peaceful surrendering by any means.”

The boy is facing a long list of charges, including assault of a police officer, being a juvenile in possession of a gun, having a gun on school grounds and having a concealed weapon. “He faces quite a few charges,” Davis said.

Davis said the handgun was said to be a .40 caliber.

Further details on the case, including the boy’s name, were not released.

“The weapon was never shown or pulled out or used to threaten anyone, ” Davis said. “He was merely in possession of it.”

Earlier this week, an 18-year-old student at  Prairie View High School in Brighton was arrested . Frank DeFiore posted threats on a social media site linked to another student, according to police, and was in possession of “numerous weapons.”
