Norwegian fans wait for the beginning of the women's semifinal handball match between Norway and Russia at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A global happiness report has made the Norwegian foreign minister, well, happy. Reacting to the news Monday that Norway tops the world happiness rankings, edging out Denmark which was No.1 in the previous report.

Re: “” March 20 news story.

According to your article, Norway tops the list of happiest people on the planet.  And what’s the reason?  A sense of community and broad social welfare support. Well-functioning institutions, including school, health care and police. A sense of trust and respect among the citizens of the country. It starts at the top and trickles down. Sounds good to me.

In President Donald Trump’s budget, the focus is on military might and border strength because we’ve been told that we need to be afraid. Very afraid. We already spend more on our military than any country on Earth.  And where does the U.S rank in happiness?  We dropped from 13th to 14th.  And do you think we will become happier as we ramp up our military and build that wall at the expense of many programs that support health care, social welfare and the environment?  I think not.
