Several hundred Colorado Springs-area students’ plans to attend a military-style charter school this fall are in jeopardy after organizers failed to get state approval instead of linking up with a local district.
Without state approval, Colorado Springs School District 11 would have to agree to accept the charter school — which it had previously rejected because of the cost — or the Colorado Military Academy will likely never open, a school official said Wednesday.
“If they (the D-11 board) don’t give approval, then we’re not going to have a military academy here in Colorado Springs,” said retired Air Force Col. Reggie Ash, president of the military academy’s board. “If it’s delayed any further, our facility, our funding and our leadership all dry up, and it all goes away — meaning it’s not going to happen, and the hundreds of students who want this option will lose their choice.”
The school has received more than 350 letters of intent from parents who want their children to attend the school, he said.
