Colorado Springs police say they don’t believe there was foul play involved in the death of a man whose body was found in a home Monday afternoon by officers searching for a car theft suspect.

“There’s no apparent criminal conduct to the death,” said Lt. Howard Black, a Colorado Springs police spokesman. “However, that’s still pending an autopsy. It sounds like it was an obvious death.”

Black called the case “a bizarre one, it really is.” It’s unclear how long the dead man had been there.

Investigators say the ordeal began when a citizen called authorities to report that their stolen vehicle and a suspect in the theft had been found in front of a house on the 200 block of Longfellow Drive in the southeast part of the city. The person said the suspect had gone into the home.

“There were multiple people inside,” Black said. “One of the residents allowed officers inside to attempt to take the suspect into the custody.”

While searching the house, police say, officers found the dead man and then located the motor vehicle theft suspect, who had barricaded himself in a downstairs room.

The suspect refused to comply with officers, Colorado Springs police say, so a tactical unit was called in to help arrest him.

Police say several arrests were made, but the identities of those taken into custody — including the car theft suspect — have not been released.

Investigators have released no details on the person found dead, including his name, age and other identifying information. They also have not speculated on how he died.
