Greeley-Evans School District 6 officials will expand walk distances for students at all grade levels next school year and change start times for classes in a move that will save the district at least $667,000.
At the board’s work session Monday afternoon, Superintendent Deirdre Pilch told the members of the Greeley-Evans School District 6 school board the change was necessary because the district needs about 16 bus drivers to be fully staffed. The new plan will ease that shortage, but Pilch estimated the district would still need six or seven drivers.
The presentation included a list of the current walk boundaries for elementary, middle and high school students. Elementary school students currently walk no more than 1¼ miles but may have to walk up to a 1½ miles under the new plan. Middle school students’ walk boundaries will increase from a 1½ to 2 miles, and the boundary for high school students may increase from 2¼ to 3 miles.
Theresa Myers, spokeswoman for the district, also said the district will no longer bus high school students out of neighborhoods. High school students will have to meet the bus at a stop, much as they would a city bus.
