Rifle police are investigating after a 28-year-old man was fatally shot in the head Wednesday night outside of an apartment building in the small, Western Slope town.
Christopher Lee Gallegos was pronounced dead at the scene of what has been ruled a homicide.
Gallegos was found dead by officers responding to reports of gunfire just before 8 p.m. on the 2600 block of Acacia Avenue.
The Garfield County coroner and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation were called to assist with processing the crime scene.
“The victim and suspect had a personal relationship,” Rifle police Chief Tommy Klein told The Denver Post. “They knew one another.”
Klein didn’t elaborate, but said further details in the case should be released on Thursday. No arrests have been announced.
An investigation remains ongoing.
Anyone with information on the slaying is asked to call the Rifle Police Department at 970-665-6500.
