Denver will experience sunshine and a high temperature in the mid-60s Thursday, but the balmy weather will be all but forgotten on Friday.

Rain is expected to start falling early Friday. Then the fog rolls in and before most people awake it will begin snowing, according to the forecast by National Weather Service meteorologists in Boulder.

The snow is expected to turn back into rain after noon and the forecast calls for wind gusts of up to 26 mph with a high of 44. The chance for precipitation hovers around 70 percent most of the day.

The rain is expected to continue until around 10 p.m. Friday, when it will again begin to snow. There will be a rain and snow mix until 5 a.m. and then snow after that, according to the weather service.

By Saturday morning, there could be between 2 to 4 inches of wet, heavy snow on the ground in the metro area, forecasters say. The mountains, meanwhile, could get between one and two feet of new snow, the weather service says.

The chance for rain and snow on Saturday is 80 percent. The high temperature on Saturday will hover around 40 degrees.

Sunshine is expected to return Sunday and Monday, the weather service says, with highs in the mid-50s both days.

Tuesday’s forecast brings another chance for rain and snow.
