An accident caused a fire Thursday at a retirement community in Golden that sent one person to a hospital.

A new resident moving into the Applewood Retirement Community, 2445 Youngfield St., placed cardboard boxes on a stove top and unknowingly turned on the burner in the process, according to West Metro Fire Rescue.

A and spread, heavily damaging two units and displacing residents from three units. Firefighters got the flames under control by 5:40 p.m.

The American Red Cross assisted two adults misplaced by the fire.
