An Aurora police officer shot a male wanted for vehicle theft, and a young girl riding in the vehicle Saturday was unhurt.

The wounded male was taken to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries, police spokeswoman Diana Cooley said. Police didn’t release his identity.

Aurora police were conducting surveillance on the suspect, who was wanted in connection with aggravated motor vehicle theft, Cooley said. Officers learned he was in a vehicle in the area of East Colfax Avenue and Sable Boulevard, she said.

Officers attempted to arrest the suspect, but he fled in the vehicle, Cooley said. The suspectap vehicle ended up in a ditch.

“During the incident, shots were fired by one of our officers,” Cooley said. “The suspect was hit.”

The officer is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Denver police are assisting in the investigation.
