The Colorado Department of Transportation is offering free-pass transponders to drivers who carpool using the Interstate 25 or U.S. 36 express lanes.

Previously the transponders, which are equipped with both free and toll modes, cost $15 for all drivers.

“The switchable pass allows an option to carpool or to say if you want a toll,” said Megan Castle, spokeswoman for CDOT’s High Performance Transportation Enterprise division.

Those who want to switch between the two modes can also receive the transponders, but must pay $15 for them.

Those who plan to use any of the other Colorado tolled facilities like the I-70 Mountain Express Lane, E-470 or Northwest Parkway, or use the pass in Toll mode on the US 36 and I-25 Express Lanes, they are not eligible for the free pass.

“This is making it easier for people who only want to carpool,” Castle said.

Drivers who receive the free pass must drive in high-occupancy-vehicle mode at least once in the first six months after receiving it to maintain a HOV Only account. To use the HOV lanes, drivers must have at least two passengers.

To receive a pass or get information about them, contact ExpressToll at or 303-537-3470.
