Re: March 30 news story.
Thank you to Denver Public Schools Superintendent Tom Boasberg for responding to U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos about vouchers. As a retired public school teacher, I have seen many children requiring different types of education — including students who are deaf or blind, have autism, who have many varieties of special needs like physical handicaps and various degrees of learning challenges, those dealing with mental health issues, and those who do not speak English. Many are below the poverty level and receive free or reduced-price lunches. Some of these children require personal care and require bathrooms with changing tables. In other words, every child in our society is welcome at the doors of public schools. When all religious and charter schools are willing to open their doors to the same percentage of challenges in their community that our public schools accept, then perhaps they can use vouchers.
