Re: March 30 Charles Krauthammer column.
When somebody like Charles Krauthammer says the country may be ready for a single-payer health care system, members of Congress should pay attention.
Medicare-for-all has had the support of the majority of citizens for many decades. Life and death issues do not belong in the hands of those for whom profit is the only aim. Their executive salaries are too high, their coverage is too complicated, their decisions are often arbitrary.
The savings with Medicare-for-all will be 50 percent, if the experiences of other countries are any guide. Yes, taxes will be higher, but premiums and co-pays will be nonexistent. Everyone — including the poor, the healthy, veterans and even members of Congress — will receive the same coverage for comprehensive, essential health benefits.
Fire departments used to be private until it became clear that too many houses were burning down and that covering every home via a small tax made more sense. It is past time to take the same approach to health care.
