Engineers personify focus. They appreciate interesting problems to solve and enjoy drilling down into the details. But the stereotype says that interesting work happens at the expense of other things, like regular meals, sleep and fun time with loved ones.
Boulder-based Tensentric provides an alternative. Workers at Tensentric, which focuses on contract design, development and prototyping for medical device manufacturers, gave their company top marks for work-life balance.
“I have an amazing amount of flexibility and variety in my day-to-day activities,” one employee wrote about the firm, “and the company’s goals and achievements line up with my value system.”
“Itap a very talented group of people who bring out the best in each other, working in the best company culture I’ve ever been associated with,” another said.
COO Jeff Gentry acknowledges that some weeks stretch long past 40 hours. At crunch time, thatap not a burden if itap balanced at other times by the ability “to go to the doctor, get your oil changed, take your kids to a ball game,” he said.
Flex scheduling and the ability to work at home helps attract and retain people with families. More than 25 percent of the firm’s staff is female.
“Our job is to give them excellent work to do,” CEO Wade Lukianow said. “Their job is to do excellent work and be professionals.”

Itap not difficult to keep attracting the best of the best, Gentry said. There’s variety in the work, it has a positive impact on humanity, and Tensentric’s size allows it to be more nimble than big manufacturers can be.
“If you want to work at 5 a.m., it doesn’t matter to me as long as our clients are thrilled with the work,” Gentry said.
