Scott Kerr’s laundry truck to help those without a place of their own won’t have as big an impact as the on homeless housing in this year’s budget, but the contraption will help Denver’s homeless get clean clothes, save money, and maybe even find a job.
For now the laundry truck is stationed at Bayaud Enterprises, a nonprofit that works to help people overcome barriers to employment. Kerr works for Bayaud and has received accolades for his push to get the truck up and running despite an early setback.
According to YourHub reporter Joe Vaccarelli, when the parked truck was hit during a high-speed chase. Luckily Kerr was able to regroup and find another truck to outfit.
Soon, Kerr dreams the truck will be touring the city, helping those in need. All he needs is a water hook up. He could use fire hydrants if he can get the permission. A load of laundry may seem like a small thing, but to someone down and out on their luck, itap a big deal.
We hope the floodgates open and Kerr finds his water all over town.
Denver and much of Colorado is suffering from an increase in the homeless population. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development there are more than 10,000 people without homes in Colorado.
In case you missed it, in November, Mayor Michael Hancock launched his Denver Day Works program to pay homeless individuals a good hourly-rate for a day’s work and reward those who do well with a job the next day, and the next, and eventually a chance for permanent placement with the city or elsewhere. . Bayaud has partnered with the city to run the program.
Colorado is lucky to have a mayor and a governor with a heart to help, but also to have folks like Kerr, who are willing to pitch in their load-of-laundry’s worth too.
