A woman in Seattle holds a sign during a rally that reads "Show us your taxes" in reference to calls for President Donald Trump to release his tax returns. Colorado Democrats are attempting to require five years of tax returns in order to be on the state's ballot.

Re: “” April 15 news story.

On Saturday, thousands of our Colorado neighbors took to the streets to demand the release of President Donald Trump’s tax returns. I support those efforts and believe that we as citizens should demand a more open and accountable government by requiring all candidates for major office to release their returns as a prerequisite to placement on the ballot.

Our lives are directly impacted by the decisions made by these elected representatives, and we as citizens deserve to know if their decisions support us or their own private interests. We have nutrition labels and ingredient lists on our food to help us make smarter decisions about what we eat; why shouldn’t we demand the same level of detail about our elected representatives and their financial interests?

There is no law that states a president has to show his or her tax returns; it appears to be more of a tradition. The progressives have now gone from “The Russians did it” to tax returns and saying it’s all about obfuscation. My question to them, and the complicit press, is where were you when Barack Obama buried his entire personal history, including his records from three different colleges?

I propose that if we want tax returns disclosed, then Congress needs to pass a law stating such, which should include them as well.

After observing the last 90 days, it is obvious that if Trump cured cancer tomorrow, the left would riot, and the New York Times, Washington Post and Denver Post headlines would read: “Trump puts 5,000 cancer doctors out of work.”

Re: “” April 17 news story.

Not only is Colorado considering a bill, , requiring presidential and vice presidential candidates to disclose their tax returns beginning with the 2020 general election, lawmakers in 26 other states are crafting similar bills.

Colorado Republican lawmakers need to acknowledge that 80 percent of Americans and 64 percent of Republicans support Donald Trump’s tax returns being made public. Constituency furor over Trump’s returns is even playing out in Republican town hall meetings across the country. It is not so much a question of how much tax Trump has paid. Itap whether there are potential conflicts of interest and how any possible tax reform measures might beneficially affect Trump personally.

Isn’t it time to have the release of tax returns made a formal requirement to run for the two highest jobs in our country? If Congress won’t do its job, oughtn’t state legislatures take up the torch?
