Interview with Melissa Peda, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
:I lived in Hollywood, Calif. for seven years and fitness is a big part of life there. I noticed most exercises caused a lot of strain on my knees which have been bad since the age of 18. I wanted to stay fit but just couldn’t find the proper balance. I began doing mat Pilates and immediately noticed such a difference in my strength, especially in my core. I also noticed I was becoming way more body aware. It became a passion and a lifestyle. I loved the idea of long lean muscles without pain. Shortly after, I began practicing yoga, barre and dancing. Every one of these exercises stays out of the joints, helps you become aware of your body and also tones and tightens your body. It’s not about fast results. It’s about gaining strength and stamina and seeing the results in your daily life.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
:“Pilates” studios pop up everywhere. We are an authentic Pilates studio. We offer mat, chair, tower, cadillac and core align at our studio. Joseph Pilates never intended Pilates to be fast, and he knew that was the fastest way to injury. There are three distinct styles of Pilates — classical, contemporary and clinical. We have teachers for all of those. The biggest difference is with our instructors. A reputable Pilates studio should have teachers that have been trained for six months to a year, and some more. All of our instructors have a minimum of 500 hours of training. Everyone must continue their education. We are members of the Pilates Method Alliance — the true test of a good studio. All of our classes are small as well. Many studios pack reformers into a room which is so dangerous. We can focus on every client with our smaller classes — six people maximum. It’s more like a personal training session than a group session.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
:That we can actually help people in all walks of life. Are you trying to get strength back from a major injury? We can help. Are you trying to lose weight, tone up, gain strength, stability and better balance? We can help. We can also help you if you just need a place to come and find your home away from home. We are more than just a fitness studio. We are a health and wellness center and we truly care about each and every one of our clients.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
:Being seen. We are in the corner of Trader Joe’s, so many people still walk in after three years saying, “We didn’t know you were here.” Then they never leave. We really are different. Most find that out upon entering.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
:We offer everything, not just Pilates. I am super passionate about fitness and have my certifications in everything in my studio. We have a cardio circuit class called “Fire and Ice,” which works the body in increments to get the max results. This class uses our Pilates jump boards along with Real Ryder Cycling Bikes, TRX and yoga to get your heart rate going, and then lengthen and stretch your muscles. We offer barre, piloxing yoga and also have an onsite nutritionist, reiki professional, trigger point therapist and more. We truly are a one-stop shop.
