A 50-foot model rocketship that took shape at the 2009 Burning Man Festival and has resided at various locations across the U.S. and Canada has now taken up residence in Denver’s Lowry neighborhood to, you know, sell ice cream.
The installation known as the “,” which looks like something out of a 1950s sci-fi movie, will anchor Rocket Ice Cream on Academy Boulevard, just a stone’s throw from the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum.
The piece, whose installation in Lowry was largely completed Tuesday, was created in 2009 by Oakland, California-based art studio Five Ton Crane Arts as an art piece for the Burning Man Festival and took a team of more than 70 artists, scientists and engineers to design and build. Its past display locations include the Embarcadero waterfront in San Francisco and at NASA.
Rocket Ice Cream, 7591 E. Academy Blvd., is set to open in June and will serve locally made Little Man Ice Cream. It’s the latest venture by the owners of the Lowry Beer Garden and partners in the Hangar 2 project, Lowry’s dining district.
