Former soldier gets 62 years in prison for 2016 Colorado Springs slaying with marijuana nexus

A former soldier has been sentenced to 62 years in prison in Colorado Springs that happened during an attempted marijuana theft.

Daniel Allen Newell, 25, pleaded guilty  in El Paso County court. Court records show prosecutors dismissed allegations of first-degree murder.

His sentence was handed down on Friday morning.

Newell was sentenced to two years in prison on a contraband charge, 48 years for murder and 12 years for first-degree burglary. according to court records.

Newell was , after he was identified as a suspect in the April 15, 2016, slaying of on Colorado Springs’ west side.

Newell is a former Fort Carson soldier and that Sullivan’s killing happened on the 200 block of North 7th Street as Newell and another man were trying to steal marijuana from a home.

The newspaper says Newell told the court he has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.
