Longmont-based HerdDogg, a startup focused on bluetooth-enabled animal tags, is teaming up with Greeley-based Dairy Tech Inc. to further develop the tagging technology and expand its marketing area.

HerdDogg CEO Melissa Brandao said the companies were not disclosing the dollar value of the investment stake. “But it significantly helps to position HerdDogg in our efforts to expand our base,” she said.

The company has raised more than $1 million to date and is in the midst of a funding round to raise another $2 million, Brandao said.

HerdDogg’s data-gathering capabilities are likened to those of Fitbits, the tracking devices used by humans. But these herd-oriented devices gather information such as animals’ temperatures and their locations in remote pastures, then send that data back to ranchers’ cellphones.

This kind of information — crucial to successful animal husbandry, was once gathered manually by ranchers monitoring their herds on horseback. Now it is collected wirelessly, allowing better tracking of animal health and reducing the costs of caring for cows.
