Re: May 5 news story.
Your article on composting left out a very efficient method that is ideally suited to Colorado’s semi-arid climate: pit composting. You simply dig a small pit and fill it with organic waste, alternating with layers of dirt, perhaps 2 inches of garbage and 1 inch of dirt. It does not have to be watered or tended in any way. In about a year you will have rich composted soil. I usually dig a 2-feet-square pit and put in everything but meat and fats, including paper, especially shredded bills, convenience checks, etc. I typically dig three pits over the course of a year, but we cook a lot and have a lot of vegetable waste, so you may need fewer.
