Loveland police are investigating after a 44-year-old man died Saturday in an altercation with a second man.

Police went to the 2100 block of Butternut Drive about 9:28 p.m. after a caller reported that a man from California had assaulted a 26-year-old Loveland resident, according to a news release.

“Initial reports stated the 26-year-old man was restraining the other male until officers arrived.”

When officers arrived they found the 44-year-old, unconscious and not breathing, the release said.

Officers performed CPR until Thompson Valley Emergency Medical Service arrived. Paramedics took the man to a hospital, where he died.

All parties are cooperating with investigators. The two men knew each other, and police don’t believe there is any threat to the public.

At this time, no one is in custody. Detectives continue to investigate. When all information is obtained, they will present the case to the Larimer County district attorney’s office.

Anyone with information regarding this incident or any crime is asked to call Detective Gerard Cortina at 970-667- 2061.
