Re: May 3 Forrest Whitman column.
My dad was a railroad man, so I have some nostalgia regarding passenger trains. I experienced the demise of passenger train travel when my dad was laid off because of the airline industry encroaching upon lucrative travel.
I was later employed by one of the nation’s largest airlines. I had the pleasure of experiencing air travel when to do so was much more civilized and a first-rate means of travel. During that time I suppose it to be much like train travel was in its prime.
With all the violence being played out on the nation’s airliners, perhaps itap time to reconsider train travel. Granted, train travel is slower; however, train technology continues to improve. Japan has trains that speed along the tracks at 149 to 186 mph. France has the fastest trains in Europe at a record 357.2 mph. When rebuilding the United States infrastructure, don’t forget about trains.
